We are all familiar with the five physical senses of sight, sound, taste, smell and touch, but did you know that in your spirit you have senses that are analogous to these physical senses? Our senses, both physical and spiritual can become sharper or duller depending on the attention or inattention that we give them. People who lack one of their senses often become extraordinarily sharp in their other senses to make up for the lost one, because of the greater attention given to the remaining senses.
Helen Keller was born as a normal, hearing and seeing child. At the age of nineteen months she lost her senses of sight and hearing due to illness. For the next few years she had only the most rudimentary communications with her family, and later described herself as having been almost a wild animal at that time. Then at the age of seven, her family sought help from the Perkins Institute for the Blind, and a young woman named Ann Sullivan came to be her teacher. Ann Sullivan broke through Helen’s communication barriers and taught her to communicate through her sense of touch. Helen Keller’s sense of touch became so sensitive that she could lip read by placing her hand over a person’s mouth! She could read sign language with her hands and read Braille. She learned to speak, even though she could not hear. She could also enjoy music being played near-by by feeling the vibrations on a table-top.
Her world might have appeared to be dark and hopeless, but she became a famous author and activist, as well as the first deaf blind person to receive a college degree. Her sense of touch became so fantastically sensitive because of her attention to it. So it is with our spiritual senses. If we neglect them, they will become dull. If we are spiritually sick, we may lose them altogether. But if we pay attention to our spiritual senses and exercise them, they will become sharper.
