Robert Michael Ballantyne (1825-1894) was a Scottish writer of juvenile fiction. Born in Edinburgh to a family of printers and publishers, he journeyed to Canada at the age of 16 where he worked as a trapper for Hudson's Bay Company for six years. A number of his later works were partially based on his experiences in the "wilds of Canada." He spent most of the rest of his life in his native Edinburgh, where he enjoyed a successful writing career.
