This is part of a series of books in which particular verses are picked from books of the bible, and the issues of Life in the Spirit are explored, in the light of the mind of God for us.
In this book, we explore six topics, from different verses in the books of From Ruth, 1Samuel and 2Samuel. They are: May the Lord be with you; Working with God; Right and wrong judgment; Making inquiry of the word of God; Wings of the wind; and The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me.
Excerpts:
May the Lord be with you
“After seeing the amazing manifestation of the presence of God to deliver Israel from the clutches of Pharaoh, Moses wanted nothing less on their journey in through the wilderness, saying to God: if your presence will not go with us, do not take us from here (Exodus 33:15).”
Working with God
“And whatever we are doing will be tested by fire, of what sort it is, whether gold or silver, wood or rubble. So it is not the impression we create in the eyes of men that matters ultimately, it is not the height of our ambition or the awards we have collected or how famous we are in the sight of others, it is the operation of the Holy Spirit within us and how our activities reflect that. Working with God is not about looking for whom to copy, it is about moving in the flow of the Holy Spirit, in his river within you (John 7:37-39).”
Right and wrong judgment
“Discretion teaches you not to express everything you feel, not to say every word that comes to you mind, not to believe everything you hear, not to share your full thoughts with everybody but to keep something back. It is about controlling outcome by controlling your action. It is about allowing your desired outcome to control your action.”
Making inquiry of the word of God
“That was why, writing to the Roman Christians, Paul in chapter 12 of his letter, mentioned becoming a living sacrifice (totally given to him) first before talking of how we should be full representations of the will of God (Romans 12:1-2).
“Inquiring of the word of God means we are focused on his intention, his plan; it is not about getting God to sign off on ours plan. Hearing his words help us to walk on the path that he wants us to.”
Wings of the wind
“Therefore, the life running in us, is that of Jesus. We have no claim to any independent life apart from his. John wrote that God has given us eternal life and that life is in his Son, Jesus Christ. We have no claim to life except in the context of being raised up with Jesus from the grave by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me
“The psalmist prayed: let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in your sight oh God (Psalm 19:14). James wrote that it ought not to be that from the same mouth comes forth cursing and blessing (James 3:2-12), which is a sign of lack of dedication when it comes to God. Lying is another wrong use of the mouth (Colossians 3:9) with the devil called the father of lies (John 8:44). Slander (Proverbs 10:18) is another, having a complaining spirit is also wrong (1Corinthians 10:10).
“For the Spirit of the Lord to speak through you, you need to purge your mouth from wrong usage.”
