Around and around they go, around and around. When will they stop we want to know?A river barge decked out with a Ferris wheel is docked along the banks of the mighty McKenzie River beside the village of Fort Good Hope in the North West Territory of Canada. It is 1967 Canada’s Centennial year; our incredible country is celebrating its 100th birthday, such a young strong nation are we. As part of the celebration a barge with a highly visible Ferris wheel, a cotton candy machine and the live “rock” band the Centennaires brings “civilization” and a touch of the outside world to these isolated communities along the McKenzie River.

Around they go, around again. The Ferris wheel slowly moves the old men in black hats out and over the swirling back eddies of this mighty river.Black top hats are worn in honour of treaty day, which has coincided with the Centennial Barge. The old brown eyes beneath the top hats see our frustration and keep going and going with eyes crinkled at the corners, laughing in their fun.On the outside they are stern old men with tall black hats, looking straight ahead. They sit high and proud in the seats that swing and sway in the wind and the wake from boats passing in close to get a better look.
