Raw winds rip and tear at a tattered hide that barely keeps the old lady and tiny baby from being frozen. The remnants of a fire sputter and threaten to extinguish itself with every blast of frozen gusts. Old moose and caribou hides have been thrown over wind fallen trees. This shanty provides temporary protection from a storm that has caught a small family out on a snowy trail in winter. They are heading back to spring camp after a long and arduous wintering in what used to be good hunting grounds at Colville Lake. In this year the caribou didn’t come. An old moose succumbed to the bitter winter and has provided tough and stringy meat for the dark days of winter solstice.

They have dried the remaining meat from the old moose, to take on their journey back to the spring ratting grounds. This method of preservation helps to eliminate weight and preserves the food indefinitely. There are five in this family group, the hunter, his wife and five year old daughter, his mother and a two-month-old baby. This boy child has been long in coming. An older son had died on this trail three years prior.
