Ted, a young man, not only running away from home, but himself as well, runs out of gas near the gate to Hank’s “farm.” Leary at first to allow Ted on his property, Hank, a recluse, who has isolated himself from society, not only opens the gate to his property by the one to his heart as well. This tale follows these two misfits as they grope, not only for the ripest mulberries, which grow on Hank’s farm, but for self-understanding and the freedom to accept themselves. The pair struggle against age differences, fears, and inexperience, but with the help of the purple derple, home-made bread and black berry preserves, they discover how to express their true inner feelings.
