George Webbe Dasent (1817-1896) was a folklorist and translator of legends and fairy-tales into English. Dasent was acquainted with Jacob Grimm who advised him to study mythology. Eventually George Dasent became a professor of English literature.

This story tells us about a man who had a meadow. And every year on the St. John’s night all the grass of the meadow mysteriously disappeared. After some years the man decided to stop that and ordered his eldest son to go and watch the meadow. But the result was the same. So the second son’s watch was no better. And there came the turn of the third son…
