Steve Sheridan was a college dropout that drifted between jobs. His medical history - severe asthma, along with growth and muscle deficiencies - plagued him throughout his grade school years. These medical issues were the sort of challenges from which most would not expect too many successes to be achieved.

During this time period, Steve was not on the best of terms with his family. He had been living in a warehouse and walking to whatever jobs he could find since he could not keep up the repairs on his vehicle. In the fall of 1988, his father played a tape from a Florida Public Radio show which showcased the Florida Trail. After listening to the tape together, his father asked him if he would be interested in attempting to become the first person to hike the trail end to end. With little hesitation Steven said “yes.”

The story that follows actually looks back on two trips; hiking the Florida Trail and then canoeing the length of the state through Florida’s rivers, lakes, and canals. You will follow Steve along his journey which would end up traversing more than just the physical challenges that he faced hiking and canoeing. Steve’s journey would also cultivate his mental and spiritual tenacity that would become the testament to the man he is today. He conveys the story of running out of water to drink, being chased by an angry bull, agitated alligators banging into his canoe, and more.

After completing the two trips, Steven Sheridan was able to find re-direction for his life and finally, success. Steve made headway to obtain a Sociology degree from Florida State University, and then advanced to obtain his Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Phoenix. Steve was also a police officer with the Florida Marine Patrol and the Fish & Wildlife Commission, and is currently a member of the training staff for the Leon County Sheriff’s Office in Florida. The challenges instilled in him by the two trips articulated in this book, handed Steve the knowledge of his potential and who he could become. Steve went on to train Special Operations teams, take leadership positions within law enforcement, earn black belts in a number of martial arts, open a martial arts academy of his own, and start his own consulting firm (Leadership & Training Research Institute – LTRI) that educates corporations and agencies with processes on how to lead and teach. What is the point of this book? The Florida outdoors has much to offer in the way of beauty, and adventure. But, you never know. It may even help someone find their potential and their future.
