This story is about a black family sharecropping on various Louisiana white-owned plantations. The father was a severe stutterer and was so cruel and authoritarian that the mother and children feared him. He abused the children mentally and physically. Because of their stress and fear of the father, some of the children stuttered and had no confidence in themselves, even though some of them had special talents that were ignored and not developed. Some of the children became great achievers and accumulated wealth when they reached adulthood, left the plantations and settled in various suburbs. This is a tumultuous story. It evokes laughter, tears, horror, and pity.
