Who or what inspires you to serve in Christian ministry? Among other motivating factors, we may serve out of gratitude to our Lord for our salvation, or at the prompting of church leaders who have witnessed a particular gifting in us. Whether we serve with hearts of gratitude or out of a sense of duty, many of us serve in ministries that the Lord never intended for us to serve in, or we serve before we are spiritually ready or equipped to do so.
Far too often, we attempt to minister through the natural talents and abilities that God endowed us with. Because we rely on our own ingenuity, savvy and energy to minister to the lost, the hurting and the spiritually hungry many of us wind up “burned out”, frustrated or overwhelmed before our ministry has ever truly commenced. Why does this happen to so many who earnestly desire to serve the Lord? Why are we so easily defeated in ministry, when our heart’s desire is to be of service to our God and to others?
