Araby

James Augustine Joyce was an Irish novelist and poet, considered to be one of the most influential writers in the modernist avant-garde of the early 20th century. As with many other Joyce stories and other stories by modernist writers, 'Araby' employs a close first-person narrator describing the world as it appeals to his senses, and leaves the reader with only a suggested, rather than outright, moral resolution. A young boy develops a crush on Mangan's sister, a girl who lives across the street. One evening she asks him if he plans to go to a bazaar called Araby. The girl will be unable to attend. The boy promises that if he goes he will bring her something from Araby... How will the story end? Read the story to find out.
