Giancarlo Baghetti was the son of a Milan, Italy industrialist whose family fortune was instrumental in his rise to prominence in Formula 1 racing in the early 1960s. Giancarlo was selected by the FISA organization to drive one of the Dino Ferrari prototype cars that it had acquired on loan from the Modena factory. It was a good choice because Giancarlo proved how good a race driver he was almost immediately, winning the 1961 Rheims Grand Prix. Unfortunately the Italian driver's career was never the same after he left to drive for ATS, a team begun by mechanics who defected from Ferrari in 1963. Aside from some success racing touring cars Baghetti was reconciled to working with poor equipment until his 1967 retirement.
