Palmistry may have been practiced as early as 3000 B.C. Regardless of the exact date of origin it has been a tool for understanding life throughout the ages of mankind. Gypsies used it and were sometimes regarded as notorious from their practice of palm reading. In the early 20th Century the West End of New York was filled with swindlers who earned fortunes through false palm readings of rich clients. However, along with people who duped their subjects, many others were regarded as scientific palmists. Jacob Ries was among these men, the first palmist in the United States who possessed a degree in palm reading. He read the palms of Queen Victoria of England, Otto Von Bismarck of Germany, the Czar of Russia, and the Emperor of Germany.
