This unusual biography of a remarkable New Zealand artist and arts tutor, offers a view of life in remote New Zealand amongst Maori during the 1920s. Be guiled by the fascinating story of an eccentric woman who would not be told, and therefore achieved much.

Yvonne Rust: Maverick Spirit (Theresa Sjoquist, 2014), is the result of 18 months of detailed research across New Zealand and includes input from over 400 contributors, many of them well-known artists. Yvonne Rust, QSM was a pioneering potter, passionate arts teacher and prolific painter who influenced many successful artists.

Raised as the only white child amongst Maori in Te Hapua in the Far North of New Zealand during the Great Depression, Rust, in many ways a renegade teacher, began teaching art in secondary schools in the 1940s. Her insights will enrich the way you think about art, education, and living as fully as possible.

She greatly influenced many creative practitioners from ballet dancers, to theatre directors, architects, jewellers, potters, ceramic artists, painters, sculptors, arts educators, designers, and many more. A genuinely original thinker, Rust produced a zeitgeist which is finally beginning to be understood. Maverick is only just a large enough word to describe her.
