In this story, Jack ends up a captain of a ship during the Civil War (lots of great historical backdrop as an added bonus!) using the persistence, 'strive and succeed' principles that Alger promoted - this book is a real page-turner, powerful characters, dramatic plot, and full of adventure and impactful storytelling - in short - you'll love it!  By Felicity Barrington on July 22, 2009

This version of the book contains the four, original illustrations, rejuvenated, and six additional place-, time-, and subject-relevant illustrations that are unique to this edition of the book.

The book was completed by Arthur M. Winfield after Alger's death.

Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 – July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author, best known for his many formulaic juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on America during the Gilded Age.
