While God Slept is the true story of a little girl raised in a broken and chaotic family and what she did to escape the pain of that childhood. She grew up to be, if not entirely conventional, at least educated, insightful and compassionate, a woman who came to see herself and the people around her with clarity, honesty, humor and sympathy.
While much of the story is set in an adult bookstore where Emily gave peep shows for a time, and while much of the language and many of the scenes are graphic and even painful, this memoir was not written with the intent to titillate nor offend. Rather, it is the story of a flawed and damaged but unbroken woman struggling to cope with a life that seems to challenge her at every step, and to understand and live morally among the people in it, not least herself.
