What begins as a week-long environmental study erupts into an explosive race through the unlikely surroundings of the Superior National Forest. Paul Westover, a reporter for the Associated Press, is thrown into much more than the story of a lifetime, since far more is at stake than his simple, lonely life.

The mystery begins with diamonds, gold, and an illegal trade route through the Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota. For decades, an international smuggling cartel—using behaviors and tactics of the great northern timber wolf—is able to funnel millions of dollars in contraband through the very habitat of the creature they so successfully emulate.

Paul initially stumbles upon the operation by accident. A late-night nature study in the woods leads to the detection of a clandestine pair of illicit gold runners. The questions begin, and eventually Paul’s awkward journalistic enterprising leads him to a series of startling and horrifying discoveries. With the lifting of trade sanctions from South Africa, the diamond smuggling business has gone bust, forcing the chief operatives of Lobo Path to shift their tactics. They decide to skip the ever-dwindling results of gold running and reach for profits of global proportions. A shipment due from Kiev in four days carries a nasty remnant of the defunct Soviet Union: three hundred grams of enriched plutonium 239. . . enough to poison the entire Great Lakes for a minimum of twenty-six thousand years.

Murder and arson send Paul into hiding. Offers of help come from several directions, but the entire town is so corrupt from years of dealings with the Path, it's impossible to know exactly who is on the take. Paul meets with resistance primarily because most of the locals are unaware of the new cargo.

Paul is nearly done in by Shannon Thorpe, a love interest with dangerous clandestine motives. Shannon is able to play Paul’s naivete into near disaster when he finds himself chasing the wrong animal.

In desperation, Paul finally enlists the help of a local Indian official. Together, they work with frantic urgency to prevent the transaction from taking place. But the shipment is vulnerable to hijacking by an even more dangerous and radical group, and a final confrontation riddled with mystery and suspense leaves the shipment on the verge of compromise . . . at a stream leading directly into the open waters of Lake Superior.
