Edie was born on dry farm in West Texas. One of six children, her family referred to her as an ugly duckling. But time and nature were kind to Edie, and she became a lovely swan with an uncanny skill for playing poker. She acquired considerable wealth using her poker skills. Her wealth included railroad stock, mining interests, private railroad cars, land, and a large sum of money. She had no interest in men, liquor or dancing. Her only desire was to own fabulous clothes and to win at the gaming tables. Circumstances would bring her back home to care for her two young nieces, and to become the grand lady of the family.
