Claire Kittredge, an Air Force general's daughter, awakes early one morning to find that her life isn't quite what it seemed. It appears her husband, a former Air Force colonel who was working for the State Department, might not be who he says he is. More frustrating is that she can't ask him for his side of things because he's disappeared. People from the U.S. government are looking for him in connection to his supposed investigation into a drug cartel's movement in Central America. When no official answers are forthcoming, Claire decides to conduct her own search, in her own way. She wastes no time. Her father hooks her up with Alex Drew, a somewhat shadowy figure from her father's past. Turns out, Alex Drew knows Claire's husband; in fact, he'd spoken to him just a few months earlier. In the process of searching for her husband, Claire discovers that Alex Drew, though very capable is also dangerous. And, too, he has his own secrets. Meanwhile, the government has its own team investigating, and it's a team associated with a rogue agency, thus making the mystery murkier and far more dangerous. Sure enough, very soon into it, dead bodies start piling up. It doesn't take long for this team to turn its full and undivided attention to Claire Kittredge and Alex Drew. The search turns into a perilous race stretching from Washington to New Mexico to Guatemala. Who will be the first to find Mac Kittredge? And what will they find? And at what cost?
