Thorns is a scuba-diving novel set in the present time during a scientific research expedition on Lady Musgrave Island on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. It is a fast moving, action novel based around the marine environment of the reef. An objective of the book is to introduce many aspects of the reef, including scuba diving and the marine life, by intertwining these facts in the plot. The Great Barrier Reef provides a back-drop for the development of the main character; as she is taken from her simple comfort-zone into a strange situation that she struggles to understand.
