Our story starts off with a bang: During the deathbed confession of his caregiver, young Ernest learns that he has been cheated of a large inheritance, and circumstances later lead him to confront the deceitful relative. Like many of the wonderful Alger stories, honesty, hard work, education and persistence show the way to success. Written like a cliffhanger, each exciting chapter will not only instill great personal growth lessons, but a desire to read more and more!

Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 – July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author, best known for his many formulaic juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on America during the Gilded Age.

This version of the book contains the two, original, full-color illustrations, rejuvenated, and 8 additional place-, time-, and subject-relevant illustrations that are unique to this edition of the book.
