This early (1896) novel by E. Phillips Oppenheim starts out at a gold mining camp in the Sierra Nevada mountains, 500 miles from San Francisco. Bryan Bryan is an Englishman who has come to America, chasing an evil man named Huntley who may have papers which explain Bryan's mysterious origins. In San Francisco at Jose's Cantina, Bryan meets the beautiful orphan Myra Mercier who is escaping from a prostitution ring. She follows Bryan to the gold mining camp where he has gone in pursuit of Huntley. Murder and mayhem ensue before the pair escapes to San Francisco.

Bryan abandons Myra after she is able to obtain the papers which Huntley held. He travels back to England, where he takes up residence in the country, near the home of Lady Helen, the ward of Lord Wessemer. Bryan seeks to improve himself, and his status, in order to win the hand of the beautiful, but cold, Lady Helen.

Ultimately, Myra makes her way to England as a actress, and Bryan must decide who to wed: The lady or the tiger.
