Beset by scandal, implicated in money laundering, implicated in the $3.5 billion collapse of Banco Ambrosiano in 1982, accused of secretly transferring the whole treasury of the independent State of Croatia over to the Vatican bank after the end of World War II and even implemented in the Holocaust of the second world war, the Vatican Bank or by its real name the “Institute for Religious Works” has for many years, in-fact decades hidden behind intense secrecy always claiming that any investigation into its dealings were illegal on the grounds of sovereign independence, is now finding that since Pope Francis decision to set up a commission of inquiry into the dealings of the scandal ridden Vatican bank, that many of their past dubious dealings are now coming out into the open starting with the arrest of Monsignor Nunzio Scarano, the head of the Vatican Bank along with a secret agent accused of money laundering. This arrest coming so fast after the investigation was set up is, I am afraid, just the tip of the iceberg and once all is known the catholic church will never be seen in the same light again.
