You've heard the media hype on cholesterol before: "Not all cholesterol is bad cholesterol." Well, this hype is actually a medical fact. For the layman, we simply know there is good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. In medical terminology, bad cholesterol is known as Low Density Lipoprotein or LDL and good cholesterol is identified as High-Density Lipoprotein or HDL.
LDL is the real bad guy. It is this type of cholesterol that is deadly as it clogs the blood vessels and results to increased risks of heart attack and other heart diseases, which is one of the leading causes of deaths in the nation. Now, the good guy here is HDL. It is the type of cholesterol that is helpful to the body. It clears out the deadly LDL from our blood stream, and in so doing, reduces the risk of all heart ailments. The goal is to have a low LDL number and a high HDL number to total your overall cholesterol count.
A poor diet is the number reason why cholesterol levels soar high but these factors also may put you at risk:
* Heredity
* Inactive lifestyle
* Obesity
* Excessive smoking & drinking
* Unstable hormones
If you have high cholesterol and if you think you are at risk then you need to immediately work at following a strict healthy diet, making big changes in your way of living and, if necessary, treat with medication, to bring down your high cholesterol level to a safer level in just weeks.
