Stanley – born Stanislav – a disaffected and naïve young Bosnian Englishman is recruited by the Secret Service Bureau to visit his family in Sarajevo and spy on fanatical Black Hand anarchists. But things go wrong when the master spy helping him is shot and Stanley has to get to Sarajevo alone, chased by enemy agents.
The Secret Agent is a coming of age story set in the few uncertain weeks leading up to WWI. We experience the unfolding of these explosive events seen through the eyes of our hero when he becomes a member of the Black Hand. And reluctantly joins the assassins planning the death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the dominant Austro-Hungarian Empire. Can he stop the assassination? Or will he in fact pull the trigger and start the war?
