THE SAGA OF NELIA DOE is a work of fiction based upon an actual case entrusted the author when he was personal counsel to a famous Hollywood producer - Mr. Andy Golden. The Goldens had two children, Brandy and Sandy Golden. When Sandy was a toddler, he contracted a rare spinal disease, which required hydrotherapy, in the family pool in Beverly Hills, California.

The Goldens had run through six caregivers without success, and finally hired a former nanny of one of the members of the British royal family. An incident occurred which gave rise to her firing, and the hiring of a tall, dark, beautiful Belizeana, the heroine Nelia Doe, who was at that time was employed as a pool cleaner at the Golden mansion. Sandy Golden thrived under the care of Nelia Doe, and they bonded so tightly, that when Mrs. Golden planned a train trip to Washington to have lunch at the White House with the Reagans, and, thereafter, a sea voyage to London to visit Queen Elizabeth II and thereafter sample the luxuries of Paris, Nelia was required to travel with the family.

But an invisible cloak covered Nelia’s insurmountable problems. She was an illegal alien and a federal fugitive, wanted in a fraudulent green card scam, and for murder. Her unlawful entry into the USA was driven by her need to provide sophisticated medical care for her crippled daughter, Esmé, in Belize. Nelia could produce neither passport nor visa, and when it was explained to Sandy that Nelia would not accompany the family, he refused to go. Mr. Golden, who didn’t relish the trip in any event, now had an excuse to opt out, and Mrs. Golden was out $1.5 million in non-refundable deposits plus a potential loss of face with the Reagans and Queen Elizabeth II.

The law firm retained by Andrew Golden Productions refused to accept Nelia as a client, and she fled the country. Sandy Golden went into a coma resulting from the shock of Nelia’s loss. The author was retained to locate her, clear up her criminal problems, and get her back into the country legally with, not only a passport and a working visa, but French and British visas as well.

This required seven separate, dangerous, legal, and illegal procedures with uncertain outcome. During the fifth procedure, obtaining a Mexican passport in Mexico City, the author, his paralegal, and Nelia were all falsely arrested for the murder of the prominent Mexican journalist Manuel Buendía. All three were placed in solitary confinement and tortured in Mexican prison, and the story narrates how the author, from his jail cell, managed to obtain their release and in due course reunite Sandy Golden with Nelia, and Nelia with her crippled child, Esmé.

The stages on which the action occurs are:
* Exotic Ambergris Key and Caya Esmeralda, Belize,
* Treacherous Sonoran Desert, Arizona,
* Sex-and-money Hollywood and Beverly Hills, California,
* Sleepy Chihuahua, Mexico, and
* Corrupt and dangerous Mexico City of the 1980s.
