Summary:
In Bath, a young painter is hired to paint the portrait of the wife of Mr Elliott.
Mrs Joan Elliot, a petit and beautiful woman from France, is shy and correct and, despite the fact that she is almost twice his age, Basil becomes infatuated with her.

She did a small vexing sound, and struggled against me for a second, but with a small whimper she yielded and let me kiss her.
