In this re-imagining of the first Pit book, a young man attempts to climb out of a pit deep inside the Earth, which in this allegorical tale represents his despair, loneliness, anger, and search for meaning in life. A disembodied voice speaks to him as he climbs, seemingly a friend, but urging on the darker instincts within his soul. On another plane of existence, a young adult named Christian Anderson pursues an acting dream which he hopes will bring about all the things he feels are missing from his life. An outcast, different from most others, and beset with chronic depression and severe loneliness, Christian's goals are spurned on by his idolization of a celebrity named Thomas young, who originally inspired his acting dream from since when Christian was a teenager, and who Christian aspires to be like. When Christian's world gets turned upside down by an unimaginable tragedy, however, his search for fulfillment and happiness in life takes a drastically different turn.
