The Paymasters, is Book 4 of the Cold War Warrior series. Josh is now partnered with an old friend of Rebecca’s, Simone “the tease” for this mission. They are tasked to find out who the financiers of the OAS (Organisation de l’Armee Secrete) are and to stop their financing of the assassination attempts on De Gaulle. Simone’s problems start when she finds out why Josh is not responding to her advances. Rebecca knows everything that Josh, sees, hears, touches, smells, says, thinks, or has emotions about. So Rebecca is fully aware of Simon’s strip tease routine that first morning and several other minor breaches of etiquette. With that finally out of the way Simone settles down to learning how to be a police partner with a telepathic spy. They soon find out that some organization known as the Paymasters is behind the funding of several attempts on President De Gaulle, and put out not only the seed money for the next assassin but provided him. Josh and his team are there to stop the flow of cash and take down the assassin if he is American. Otherwise the French will do the deed.

Even as all of this is getting started Rebecca announces she is pregnant. Well actually Josh does, as that is how closely they have bonded. He hadn’t intended to use her at all in the field before this came up but now there is no option as the Director of the CIA has grounded her in her analytical and telepathic communications position in the Paris office. She will eventually commute out into the field to be with Josh on weekends. Her ride out then taking Simone back to be with Charles her fiancé. Eventually they know where the money is and who has been building up the account to the one million dollars the assassin wants to do the job.

The French are to do the takedown of the OAS as an internal thing without American assistance. Josh wants his American side of the team to at least be present for this part of the finish. He is finally able to accomplish his ends, but it will cost him dearly and in unexpected ways.

Rebecca and Josh have been slowly recruiting more telepaths into their operation. They now have fifteen people that they are developing one way or another. The odds of them finding this many people in their lifetimes were minimal at best. Only about one person in ten million has any real telepathic abilities at all and only one in ten of those is a male according to there boss back in Langley, Dr. Andrew Ross, Director of Special Operations. Yet of the five children two are males, and of the ten adults now involved three are males. All are working out and learning quickly what Rebecca and Josh have to show them about being useful telepaths in this world that doesn’t accept them as such.

With the finding and cutting off of the funds, and as everyone that matters knows the assassin is American, Josh has a real problem. The assassin is a friend.... A military buddy if you wish.... Someone he would trust with his life.... Now he knows he is a traitor to their government. In the beginning of this mission the French had insisted that an American has to lead the team and take down the assassin, if the assassin turned out to be American, and guess who that is. Among his other issues Josh also comes to realize that there is a mole in the CIA that is feeding information to the assassin. So now he has to uncover and eliminate that traitor as well as the assassin.
