A moneylender is knocked unconscious and wakens in a dark hole. ‘The oubliette’ was accidently discovered by Norman Poulson, and he uses it to avenge what he sees as the injustice of serious criminals being given light sentences. He wants Razan Latkos to confess all, and deprives him of food, water, sanitation, and even light until his terms are met. Norman uncovers a second oubliette, and soon finds an occupant in the shape of a serial paedophile. Simultaneously, a bungled art theft has left CID puzzled due to the thief’s ineptitude and his choice of booty.
DI Jim Bennett calls on all of his knowledge and experience in an attempt to solve these crimes, and the discovery of the bodies of two young men, overdosed on speedballs, a heroin and cocaine cocktail, confirms the presence of crack on the streets, making things a whole lot more dangerous.
A gentleman confidence trickster, a geriatric thief on an industrial scale, and a man with no memory help to push Welford police resources to their very limit.
As the body count rises in Welford, Jim Bennett knows that time is against him and he has to resort to a commodity that his DCI doesn’t condone; a copper’s instinct.
