Port Helm is an isolated inn on the summit of a cliff on the Kentish coast. One day, at the foot of the precipice, it is discovered Belmont Trair, a rich as eccentric wanderer, with a knife planted in his heart and his body mangled by the terrible fall. The murderer, Hilker, the manager of the inn where it looks the crime has been committed, is individualised immediately, with overwhelming proofs. But Carlyle Smith, a private detective hired by the uncle of the presumed murderer to demonstrate a possible innocence which not even the same uncle believes, detests the too simple solutions. His inquiries will be more meticulous than those of the police, satisfied by the obviousness of the case, and they will lead him on a track that will carry him in Spain, a country that enters with extraordinary insistence into the case. The conclusion will be, obviously, surprising... or, surprisingly, obvious?
