Jules Gabriel Verne was a French novelist, poet and playwright best known for his adventure novels and his profound influence on the literary genre of science fiction. Verne is generally considered a major literary author in France and most of Europe, where he has had a wide influence on the literary avant-garde and on surrealism. His reputation is markedly different in Anglophone regions, where he has often been labeled a writer of genre fiction or children's books, not least because of the highly abridged and altered translations in which his novels are often reprinted.

Events of the novel took a place immediately after the American Civil War. After the end of the war in Baltimore, USA, was organized the Gun Club. Its founder Impey Barbicane was trying to create a gun, a shell which could reach the moon after the shot. Preliminary calculations have shown that the technology of that time was allowed to build such weapon. Barbiken managed to attract the world's attention and to collected much money on a major project, which was sponsored by many countries, including the United States. The development gigantic cannon began… Could he built a gun? Who was the first astronaut? What troubles did they face? Read the story till the end to know!
