Arthur and his sister Phemie live in a dreary crumbling house by the seaside with their Uncle. Arthur is a selfish spoiled boy frustrated by his surroundings and Phemie is a sweet gentle girl able to deal with Arthur’s selfishness with compassion and grace. In this story Arthur befriends a local Jewish boy named Asahel and becomes determined to find and explore the local Tin mine. He is sure he will discovered treasure there. Asahel is struggling with fear of death but at first is rebuffed in questions by Arthur who is ashamed of his Christianity because he isn’t living it. There are a number of mysteries in the story that will be solved. Why is Arthur’s Uncle so gloomy and downcast? What happened to the children’s father? Most importantly, what is the treasure to be discovered in the abandoned mine? This is a sweet story of forgiveness and salvation.

Charlotte Maria Tucker, an English author, who wrote under the pseudonym A.L.O.E.
(a Lady of England). Charlotte wrote many books for children and dedicated the proceeds to charity. Most of her stories were allegories with clear moral teaching.
