A chance meeting with the hotelier Rudolph Wenger and his female companion ends in a orgy of drink, drugs and sex, that sees Gary, a young Irish man forced to flee the police on the island of Jersey.

Arriving in Dublin, he moves into  a low-rent, tenement house run by the mysterious landlord Mr. Jones and inhabited by an array of eccentric and violent characters living on the fringes of society.

Brainwashed by the rote learning of his school teacher father, he lives in a world of classical quotations, cliches, street slang  and the detritus of half-remembered facts and theories. Tormented by doubts concerning the identity of his biological parents, the pain of a strict upbringing, and his own sexuality, he strives to leave the past behind and find a new life and love in the city. But the house seems to have its own ghosts that are not prepared to allow him forget his past.

He discovers that certain residents of the house have formed a Cell-a loose grouping of people who live, work and love freely. Gary's wish to join the Cell is rebuffed by the other residents but especially by Karen, a new arrival in the house that he slowly becomes obsessed with. This dismissal forces him deeper inside himself where his disintegrating personality leads  him to seek revenge on all whom he perceives to have wronged him. When Mr Jones offers him a job in his video duplicating plant his exposure to pornography fuels his final descent into madness and murder.

The creation of a sex tape by the landlord's criminal associates forces Gary to ritualistically murder Denise, a drug-addicted prostitute living in the house. This act sparks a police investigation. The partner of the murdered girl who is charged with the crime promises bloody retribution on Gary and his associates in the shape of a hitman.

While his landlord seems to know more about the killing than he does and he tries desperately to dodge assassination and the police, Gary's relationship with karen turns violent. When she tries to blackmail him with the one piece of evidence that can put him away forever-he realises it's time to kill again.
