Richard Wilhelm (10 May 1873 – 2 Mar 1930) was a German sinologist, theologian, and missionary. He is best remembered for his translations of philosophical works and collecting Chinese folk tales, fables and fairy tales. His translation of the I Ching is still regarded as one of the finest, as is his translation of The Secret of the Golden Flower. THE LITTLE HUNTING DOG is a Chinese fairy tale, included by Richard Wilhelm into the Chinese Fairy book. It revolves around a scholar. He found little comfort in company of fellow humans, thought they were too noisy. So he settled in solitude in Buddhist temple. Once he was resting on his bed after dinner, when suddenly two little knights with plumes in their helmets rode into the room, thus beginning scholar’s unusual day.
