One of ten children of the head cook at Riceland Plantation, eleven-year-old Hannah is sold as a slave to a kind Georgia family to help care for their expected baby. But when the mother and child die in childbirth, Hannah is sold again, this time to cruel tavern owners who beat her often.
She would have been unable to endure had it not been for the kindess of Miss Rachel, the lonely lady next door who would buy her if her owners would sell. Then her mistress insists that she become a thief, and Hannah runs away.

On her escape route, she encounters a revival meeting where she finds her former owner, Alex DuVane, who leads her to Christ. He warns Hannah that runaway slaves can be put to death if caught, and convinces her that as long as she is a runaway, she will never be completely free. He offers to take her back to her cruel owners, and promises to get them to sell her to Miss Rachel.

Can Alex DuVane convince the Westons to sell Hannah to kind Miss Rachel, who will set her free? Or must she continue the miserable life of a slave in the hands of cruel masters?
