The Janitor’s 13th Key is a short story set in the near future when students must pass an end of the year exam conducted in virtual reality. When one student disappears after the exam, her best friend, Vic (never Victoria), sets out to discover the truth.

This story is told from the point of view of Vic, an eighth grader at Saturn Academy. Three generations of Vic’s family have graduated from this prestigious boarding school. Like all the students at Saturn Academy she worries about passing her year-end exam that allows her to move on to the next grade. Unlike the rest, Vic has a unique talent for interacting with computers through virtual reality. With her gift and the help of friends she must face the truth behind the disappearance in the real world.
