Re-read the original book RIGHT AFTER reading this book!
The original book suddenly became much richer and more enticing after I finished this Behind the Story, I HAD to open up the original book once more! Highly recommended!

“What was the inspiration behind the creation of this book?”

Rebecca Skloot was 16 when she first heard about the HeLa cells in a classroom. Her teacher informed them that the cell line came from a black American woman who had died of cancer in 1951. It was the same year that her father, famous writer Floyd Skloot, had contacted brain illness caused by a virus that had no cure, reason why he permitted himself to become a drug test subject. This caused him and his family much pain and frustration (Later on, Floyd Skloot’s life would be held as an example of a writer’s tenacity in sections about famous writers in fiction writing books and he would write extensively about living with brain damage himself). Rebecca would drive him to and from the hospital whenever he would receive test drug infusions. And now, here were cells used for experimentations on just about anything and everything that mattered in medicinal science. Her curiosity was piqued high time.
The little information her teacher provided was utterly lacking. She was especially curious about HeLa, the person, and particularly sensitive about how her family felt and reacted about science meddling with her cells. How did they feel about her living cells being grown in labs and being experimented upon? During her eventual investigation, Skloot learned a lot about the ups and downs of medicinal science.
