The 50 greatest 19th Century American short stories were determined by a new ground-breaking ranking system. Each story was awarded points for every appearance in an important literary anthology, database, or website. Rather than one person's opinion, the stories in this collection are the result of a consensus of literary scholars and readers over the past century. Over a century has passed since the end of the 19th Century, and the literary dust has settled to a large extent on the greatest American stories. They have been ranked 1-50 according to their relative point totals. Many of the stories are familiar to readers of American Literature with perhaps a few surprises, with some ranking higher or lower than expected.
