On a summer day Drew Morgan sets out for a walk in the Adirondack woods. While she is there, a storm comes through obliterating the trail and leaving Drew lost. For five days Drew wanders through the woods alone, starving and suffering from an infected wound. Just before she is rescued, she sees in the woods, the ghost of a teenage girl.
After her rescue, Drew convinces friends that someone has died in the woods. The next weekend they head out with search and rescue dogs and discover the body of Sara Kyzinski who has been murdered. With a friend who is a reporter for the local paper, and against the advice of a forest ranger, who has become her lover, Drew sets out to find Sara's killer, running up against a murderer who is willing to kill again to keep his secret safe.
