Anna Stone lost her friend in a fire. And then she died. Or at least, she thought she did. As it so happens, some unusual family history and some nonsense about prophesy has led to a complication. You see, Anna was never human. She was what you might call forsaken, those that heaven would rather forget. A descendant of unholy union between witch and angel, which in afterlife terms makes her a commodity. In the ongoing battle between Heaven and Hell, the forsaken are in a precarious position. Anna’s soul is unfit for heaven, but that doesn't mean the holiest of holies wants the opposition to get its hands on it. If she is ever going to get to Heaven, Anna must prove herself worthy. But Heaven neglected to provide a handbook, and Anna is completely lost.

Naturally, a forsaken soul is just what Hell needs to turn the tides, and Anna is top of the list. Much to the chagrin of Nathaniel. Forsaken, exiled angel, enslaved to the devil and utterly fed up, Nathaniel wants nothing more than a way out of his eternal servitude, and the boss has given him just such an opportunity. All he has to do is capture the soul of Anna Stone. Sounds simple doesn't it? But Nathaniel has a natural proclivity for complicating things. Who else could he fall for but the one girl whose death could buy his freedom?

With the forces of Hell on their tail, and tangled in exasperating family drama, Anna and Nathaniel struggle to set the world to rights.
