The story reveals four seekers who have uncovered the unnerving terror of a cryptic tome called the Book of Gates: Arthur James, an active Satanist looking for religious clues to the disappearance of his great-grandfather; Alice Banister, an archaeological professor who has uncovered a billion year old ruin; Mikel Brzica, an eccentric, renegade priest who believes he has discovered a new revelation; and Alan Parker, the college curator haunted by an ancient horror that assumes a familiar phantom. The price is high as the narrator reads the secret files to break the mystery. He discovers an eerie ritual game that leads to a lost age where nightmarish creatures await the four "players"-or the eternal rewards reserved for the fifth.
But things indeed are not as they seem. For when the Circle of Eternity appears in the skies of the world, the Gates are open to Earth's ancient past. And when the Gates have opened, They Who Lived Before can enter the world again. But the narrator may already know. And with terror comes a great reward.
