THE FOG RISES is a story that captures some of the issues that teens are faced with in today's society. A fifteen year old girl, Brenna Jackson, has to grapple with her own festering emotional problems and demons that plague her and she is also confronted with the fact that her sexuality has changed, which becomes another source of issues that challenges her very own equilibrium. Brenna is caught up in Middle America, with parents who are very conservative and a rather precocious and extremely bright and talented younger sister, Ella Grace, who it turns out, is a child prodigy. Brenna seems to grow more confused and she becomes more distraught as a series of events makes her life appear to unravel and she becomes less and less able to make sense of who she is or where she is headed!
As the story evolves, while Brenna grapples with all her issues and afraid that she will follow in the foot steps of her mother, who deals with many emotional difficulties herself, Brenna happens to decide that it is time for her to declare that she “LIKES GIRLS!” She seems to think it is the right decision to make, this new-found declaration about her sexuality, but her decision backfires and Brenna is left to wonder if she should have kept quiet, realizing that one of her biggest problems is that she possibly does not know when to speak and when to keep quiet. Also, she then faces a number of issues with her new girlfriend, Isabella Pratt, as well as that of other females, others seeking her out now that she has declared her new-found sexuality. As the story unfolds, Brenna finds this declaration only adds to her frustration, afraid that she is about to slip and fall off her emotional tight rope.
