Billy O'Connor, tall, skinny and unpopular, desperately wants to be good at something.  Then something weird happens.  Almost overnight, Bumbling Billy acquires talents that make him the coolest boy in school.  He can play the piano, paint like Charles Conder (a famous Australian artist) and dance like Fred Astaire (who tap-danced his way through old, American, black-and-white movies).  Even better, Billy can rap!

Do these spookily acquired talents bring Billy happiness, or does popularity come at a price?  When Charles Conder's original paintings are stolen from the National Gallery, the villains kidnap Billy's aunt and threaten to kill her unless Billy hands over his signed "copies".  Even worse, the spirit of Big Dog Barker, who's "taught" Billy to hip-hop and rap, begins to take over.  To top it all, his mother threatens to take him away from Melbourne and away from Aunt Addie's care.  Will Billy be forcibly removed from his friends and the only home he's ever known?
