Charles Montgomery Skinner was an American writer, mostly known as a collector of North American folklore. “The Death Waltz” is a mystic short story, entered in the collection “Myth and legends of our own land”. The narration is about a pretty young lady living in the military post at Fort Union, New Mexico, who has the pay for her love by the officers. But one young lieutenant proves especially susceptible to her charms. Going to the military expedition he promises to win her hand and marry her. Being a coquette, the lady facetious gives the word to waiting him. But when the lieutenant is missing, she forgets her words and marries a young man from the East.
