Kathryn fearing a schizophrenic breakdown, Bakerizes herself. Dr. Bealor the examining physician hypnotizes her to determine the origin of the voices. The doctor is told about Ashiba, a parallel world in which he appears and Kathryn is known as Mearah champion of the gods. At the session’s end he informs Kathryn that he will treat her privately. Discharged, Kathryn continues her sessions with him. During the ensuing weeks of hypno-therapy the story of the parallel world unfolds. Bealor discovers the origin of the universe, the birth of day and night, the seasons of the year, and how good and evil came to exist on Ashiba. Mearah is charged to battle Lord Syba—half-brother of Alptor, Ruler of the Council of Forty — on Ashiba so the world can come out of enchantment. Bealor and Kathryn realize that their lives are a continuation of the past. Mearah banishes Syba to the ocean’s depth. Freed temporarily, Syba hunts down Kathryn since her death would end his banishment. During their confrontation, Kathryn kills Syba and Bealor whisks Kathryn away.
