A short story, an exert, from partway along a journey.
Not too far away in the future the violence of the climate effected weather and embittered conflict over resources had broken apart the global governing bodies.
Now governed by regional factions, the chaos and opportunism lead to several large wars and cross continent skirmishes. All ending in stalemate; two with the use of biological weapons.
In the remnants of a great city, the rule of law is badly divided between corrupt civic power and the financial strength of local commerce and a search is going on. The last biologically ended conflict had produced some strange side effects, several groups now sought the origins of the weapons used that most believed had been destroyed in the conflict.
After several weeks of dead ends or seemingly useless searches our two characters arrive at the building and set themselves to try and find at least one answer to any of the dozen or so questions that were unsettling them.
