This is a very detailed account of the careers of, mainly, the Younger Brothers -- Cole, Henry, James, John, and Robert (Bob). The James Brothers -- Frank and Jesse -- are included, since they rode with the Youngers for much of their lives.
The book covers the Youngers from their birth to their eventual imprisonment, and includes all of the robberies, hold-ups, chases and escapes that have been attributed to them, despite Cole Younger's claim to the contrary.
This edition of the book contains all 23 of original illustrations, rejuvenated. Eight of the illustrations are in full-color which was, of course, an expensive process in the late 19th century.
J. W. Buel was an author and newspaperman in and around St. Louis. He wrote the first biography of Wild Bill Hickok. Buel has not been admired for his factual accuracy, and is said to work from the premise "Si non e vero, e buon trovato," that is, "If it is not true, it is cleverly invented."
