Summary of The Book Club
Six year old Walter lives with his older brother and sister in a cold loveless orphanage, doomed to a life of endless chores and misery, constantly tormented by their cruel guardians, the Geechers.
In a desperate quest for fun, Walter signs up for a “free” book club. But Maria and Alex realize nothing is free when they discover that to join the “free” book club they must submit an original story to a writing contest.
Entering the contest, or better yet winning it, would be a dream come true, but all their free time is taken up by the demands of the evil Geechers. The children know they’d never have time to make an entry, so they give up the thought of the contest.
But in the middle of one deathly still night, guided by magical forces of The Book Club, Maria moves to her desk and effortlessly writes a story. Still in the grips of the trance, she slips out her bedroom window which magically opens for the first time in years, and mails her entry. The next morning she awakes with only shadowy memories of what happened the night before.
Soon, books from the Book Club begin to arrive in mysterious ways – by parachute, plane, or pelican.
Before long, the children realize each new book comes true! They become convinced it’s time to leave their dreary place and begin a treacherous but fascinating pursuit of a happier life.
The Geechers don’t tolerate this, and hire the merciless bounty hunter of children, T. Bone Snake, to drag them back.
At each turn T. Bone Snake gets closer to grabbing them. As the children realize the Book Club Books are becoming less and less help they are forced to rely only on their own courage and ingenuity for survival.
Join Maria, Alex, and Walter on their exciting journey, all the way to the surprising end that will change their lives forever.
