Bad Jim is once again invited to eat supper with Linda Jones.
Linda again has more good news for Bad Jim. She says, “The information in the documents you provided has all checked out. I'll agree to the document swaps and you can leave in the morning.”
Bad Jim says, “I'm pleased that things went well and that you're willing to do the document swaps. I feel that the document swaps are the best way for you. However, is it possible that I could leave tonight?”
Linda says, “You really need to wait for morning. You have a long drive back and I want you to start out well rested.”
Bad Jim says, “Okay, tomorrow morning it is!” Privately he wonders if the delay is so that he can start fresh or is it so that an ambush can be set up. However, he has no choice at all in the matter.
In the morning, Linda calls for Bad Jim.
She says, “As I told you before, your information seems to check out. I still don't trust you. However, my people here tell me that I'm indeed in immediate danger from the two organizations named in the information packet you brought. It would appear that I really have no choice. However, if there are any tricks, I'll release the information I have on Big Louie and you'll then die at the hands of your employers.”
Bad Jim says smoothly, “I didn't come here to try to trick you and die at the hands of your soldiers. Nor do I intend to get involved with any tricks by my employers. There's no reason for my employers to trick you and every reason not to. You know that last from the documents I gave you.”
Linda nods in agreement.
An exchange plan is set up between Linda and Bad Jim, with a schedule of couriers who'll deliver the new information packets and pick up one of the five remaining documents that the lady has been using as blackmail against Big Louie.
At the end of the negotiations, the lady gives Bad Jim a single sheet of paper.
The disappointment on Bad Jim’s face is obvious. He says slowly, “Lady, I guess that you still don’t trust me. This is the least valuable of the documents. I had hoped that you would at least give me something that pertains directly to Big Louie. You know, I do work for the man. However, the deal was just for a document, any document. I'll take the document you give me back to my employer as the first of the six documents.”
The lady laughs a nasty little laugh. “You're correct! Our agreement is for six exchanges. This is the first one. Big Louie will have to wait until the sixth exchange to get off the hook. Both you and he had better accept that!”
Bad Jim shrugs and checks the document he has just been given for several characteristics. Satisfied that it's the genuine document, he places it in a thin container and seals the container.
Bad Jim then goes out and retrieves his car under the watchful eye of Henrique.
Henrique can’t resist the opportunity to give Bad Jim trouble. The situation comes very close to a fight between the two men. However, at the last moment, Henrique backs off.
Bad Jim then drives out of the fortified house and begins the long drive back to the US border. He's alert for the possibility of an ambush, an ambush that will almost certainly happen. However, there's only one place where an ambush can reasonably be laid. There's a little spine of high hills that crosses the track of the road. The road twists and turns as it crosses the spine. The road thus leads through narrow canyons. The narrow canyons are the obvious spot for an ambush.
